Audio is typically way far down on a new video maker’s priority list. You think well my camera has a mic so I’m covered. Hate to break it do you newbie, that mic isn’t going to cut it. You need to know why audio is key for success in video. A good mic is huge in making you stand out in the over saturated market that is video.
Why you can’t fake audio in video
You can rig, work around and fake a lot of things in video – honestly that’s part of the fun, the magic behind the scenes. Audio unfortunately can’t be. You need a decent mic to pick up the synced sound. Audio dubbing looks terrible and even in movies with big budgets go back and dub a scene it looks cheesy and cheap. Audio is always better when it’s captured live.
Have you ever recorded something using your in camera mic and heard a high pitched background noise? This is called machine noise. The notice that a mic pics up from the hum of the machine that’s recording. The funny thing is you would think that this would be limited to video cameras with moving parts – but even on iPads and iPhones that are solid state drives you can still pick up the noise.
Why Audio is Key for Success in Video for Bloggers
When you use a mic, your voice becomes the key audio element and the rest of the noise fades into the background. This actually makes you seem closer to your audience and your voice is competing with all the other background noise.
If you are properly using your mic – people won’t notice. They will pay attention to your video’s subject. They can notice if your not miced and can’t clearly understand what you’re saying.
I’ve put together a video for you to see..err. I mean hear the difference.
Mics I Recommend:
This handy little lav plugs right into your smart phone/ tablet to give you great audio ( key for any video). Because it plugs directly in it’s a more affordable – and by Rode, and audio brand I trust and recommend. You can find more info here.
This cute little Snowball mic by Blue carries a great audio punch like it’s big brother the Yeti mic, but has a smaller price tag and footprint. Great for Voice over narration. Check it out here.
This wireless lav system costs a pretty penny. But I’ve had my Sennhieser wireless lavs for over 15 years and they work as good as the day I bought them. This is one of those long term investments that (if you properly care for and maintain your equipment) really pays off. Get more info here.
