When you’re starting out in a new venture, you can’t afford all the newest equipment. Sometimes you gotta make do with what you got. A light kit is one of those things that I think is nice to have – but you can fake your way along until you make one. You have lights in your house – and I’m pretty sure that you can afford a $1 piece of foam core from the local dollar store. The only think can’t afford is to ignore lighting.
3 Point Lighting
This formula for lighting is an industry standard. You understand 3 point lighting and you have a great formula for making your subject look good. 3 Point lighting is made up of 3 lights the Key, the fill and the back light.
This is the strongest light and can be placed on any side of the subject
This light fills in where the key is shining, it’s not as strong, to give contrast to the subject.
This light is often ignored by amateur vloggers and is really important to separate the subject from the background.
How to Fake 3 Point Lighting
Once you understand the basic concepts for 3 point lighting – faking it without a proper light kit is possible – it just takes a little more work. Take a look at the lights in your house – all the lamps, and other portable lights. Gather up the ones that you think will work for a light kit. For the key you will most likely need 2-4 lights. The fill can be 1 light or a bounce board. The back light can be a lamp placed on a stool behind the subject. It will take some trial and error. You will need to try taking off lampshades, adding or unscrewing light bulbs, but it is possible to have a semi decent lighting it just takes more work than throwing up a light kit.
